Transmissions transfer the rotational speed and torque of the engine. The weight of the transmission is determined by the dimensioning of the gears and the shafts. One way of reducing the transmission weight is to use hollow shafts. These may be produced as a solid shaft and drilled hollow. However, the cylindrical hollow space produced in this way has a diameter that is limited by the shaft ends. Through a smart process combination, it is possible to produce shafts with a highly undercut hollow space on the inside. These shapes have the necessary wall thickness everywhere while at the same time achieving maximum mass savings.
