Four-wheel drive systems are increasingly being designed in a disconnect way to minimize friction and drag losses. If an axle is then connected, this is achieved by a lamellae clutch. The hub shaft carries one half of the lamellae in such a clutch. The part is warm forged and then soft machined, induction hardened on the splines and bearing surfaces, and then rendered ready for assembly by means of hard machining.
