The Steel Innovation Prize is awarded in various categories every three years. For this project, the prize was awarded to Daimler, Kolbenschmidt and Hirschvogel in equal measure.
The innovative use of steel for reducing the consumption of diesel engines was the reason for the jury’s decision to present the Steel Innovation Prize for second place in the category “Products made of Steel” to the Hirschvogel Automotive Group.
Hirschvogel worked together with Kolbenschmidt to design a piston for use in diesel engines. This component, which is produced in a process chain comprising forging and machining, has a unique feature: Within the piston is a cooling duct which protects the upper face of the part from overheating during combustion.
