TRANSMISSIONS

Modern, high-performance engines introduce high torques into vehicle transmissions, necessitating the use of forged components in order to transfer the loads in a reliable and sustained way.

The Hirschvogel Automotive Group produces components that transfer power, including transmission shafts, gear wheels, planet carriers and output flanges, at a weight range of between 0.5 and 35 kg in large serial production for all passenger and commercial types of transmission. When it comes to cold forged shafts, the Hirschvogel Automotive Group is the market leader in Europe, supplying input, output, main and intermediate shafts as well as countershafts. Mostly these are designed solid or hollow with one or two flanges. Special shaft geometries are produced by swaging.

Besides cold forging, warm and hot forged parts are also produced in large volumes. This is especially advantageous when it comes to pinions with different head-shaft ratios, as the optimum forging process is available in each individual case. When producing planet gear carriers, a combination of hot and cold forging processes is used. The uneven mass distribution caused by the towers and struts of the part is achieved by means of hot forging; the contact surfaces of the planetary gears, which have tight tolerances, are subsequently cold calibrated.

Case-hardening steels are the standard material used for forged transmission parts. After hardening, these steels demonstrate hard rolling surfaces and high levels of core toughness. By taking into account the fiber flow, the component properties can be optimized even further.
