POWERTRAIN
In cars a distinction is made between front-, rear- and four-wheel drive systems. Each drive system requires different parts. Various forged and extruded components are used in the powertrain. For the propeller shaft, for instance, yokes, sliding sleeves and spiders are produced by means of forging technologies. In front- and rear-axle transmissions as well as in the differential, classic hot, warm and cold forged parts include pinions, ring gears, differential bevel gears, side shaft gears and output flanges. At the same time, weight-optimized hollow flange shafts are increasingly being used. These are produced in a combination of processes which includes swaging. In addition, constant-velocity shafts with inner and outer joints are also components which require a high number of forged parts.
A wide range of these parts is produced by the Hirschvogel Automotive Group. For the propeller shaft, for example, the Group manufactures sliding yokes, weldable yokes and outer shafts, among other components. For half shafts, the outer races of constant-velocity joints are likewise produced by forging. Tripot universal joints, which need to execute both a longitudinal and an angular movement, are produced with ready-for-assembly races. This is achieved by a combination of warm and cold forging processes. In the case of Rzeppa joints, which need to execute an even greater angular movement due to steering, the outer races are similarly produced by a combination of warm and cold forging.
An additional highlight of the Hirschvogel product range in the area of the powertrain is the clutch in the transfer gearbox. This ready-for-assembly disk carrier represents an ideal combination of forging and machining. The production of the internal splines by means of cold forging is the decisive criteria for this innovative part. Thanks to the close collaboration between the Hirschvogel plants, we are able to provide our customers with a part that is optimum from a technical point of view as well as cost-efficient from a financial one.
